Fender Blacktop Telecaster HH audience - Damon Chivers @ Nevada Music UK

Get this Tele here... www.nevadamusic.co.uk Every now and then the usually conservative Fender designers kick loose and decide to hot-rod one of their standard models to add a little glitz and glamour - After all when everyone else is saying that the design of the original Telecaster is so perfect that it would be a crime to change it - How can you better the original ...? The answer of course is not to change it - just to give it a new suit or a new haircut, which I beleive is what Fender have done with the new Blacktop series - inside it's still the great instrument that it used to be, yet on the outside it's had a contemporary make over to bring it up to date - so just who was it that said you can't play heavy Metal on a Telecaster ... ? The Blacktop Telecaster HH is a no-nonsense dual-Humbucker Tele that'll impress the hell out of you without breaking the bank. Twin Vintage-style Fender Blacktop Alnico humbucking pickups deliver the hot high-gain power of today's most aggressive sounds. Other distinctive touches include skirted black amp knobs, a reversed control plate and a vintage-style hard-tail bridge with six grooved saddles for optimum string alignment. The Blacktop Telecaster HH features include an Alder body, Rosewood 9.5"-radius fretboard, 22 medium jumbo frets, a gloss urethane finish, and Nickel/Chrome hardware.

Scoprite insieme a Sonia come fare!

How to Get Rid of Garlic Smell

Garlic is easy to grow and can be grown year-round in mild climates. In cold climates, cloves can be planted in the ground about six weeks before the soil freezes, and harvested in late spring. Garlic plants are not attacked by pests. They instead suffer from pink root, a disease that stunts the roots and turns them pink or red. Garlic plants can be grown close together, leaving enough room for the bulbs to mature, and are easily grown in containers of sufficient depth.

A large number of sulfur compounds contribute to the smell and taste of garlic. Diallyl disulfide is believed to be an important odor component. Allicin has been found to be the compound most responsible for the "hot" sensation of raw garlic. This chemical opens thermo TRP (transient receptor potential) channels that are responsible for the burning sense of heat in foods. The process of cooking garlic removes allicin, thus mellowing its spiciness. Due to its strong odor, garlic is sometimes called the "stinking rose."

Garlic Smell Removal

* What works for onions works for garlic as well. An easy way to remove these smells from your hands is to soap them up and rub them along a stainless steel faucet or knife. It really does work but it must be stainless steel that you're rubbing, and not any other metal.

How does it work exactly? It's not really an exact science, but the theory says that the sulfur from the onion/garlic/fish would be attracted to and bind with one or more of the metals in stainless steel.

As such, it's a win-win situation for the steel (which becomes even more stainless through sulfuric intervention) and your hands (which will become odorless once sulfur binds with the steel). Once the sulfur compounds bind to the steel, then the odor is removed from your fingers.

* Don't have stainless steel utensils on hand? Squeeze the juice of lemons into a bowl. Dip your hands in the liquid concentrate for 3 minutes, then rinse off. Your hands will smell like fresh lemons instead of garlic!

* Remove garlic smell from a wooden cutting board by covering it with a thick paste made of sodium bicarbonate and a little warm water. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes and then rinse. Baking soda is also good for deodorizing garlic-scented hands, along with a little salt and water.

* Noxzema is another product that's effective at removing unwanted garlic scent on your hands and body. It's a skin cleanser marketed by Procter & Gamble that contains camphor, menthol and eucalyptus, among other ingredients.

Originally developed as a sunburn remedy, it is also effective as a cure for garlic odors because of its list of odor-fighting, fragrant and medicinal ingredients.

* Get a Prozone Air Purifier; it's good for keeping your whole house smelling fresh. Eliminate musty basement smell or cooking smells - garlic smells in particular- from your home by using this highly effective device. Unfortunately, there's a catch to this product's potency; it's quite expensive.

* If you want something a little cheaper, you can try Ozium Air Freshener; it's just a small bottle of deodorizer, but just a little goes a long way. You can get this product at most Wal-Mart branches and some car part dealerships.

Garlic Breath Removal

When eaten in quantity, garlic may be strongly evident in the garlic consumer's sweat and breath the following day. This is because garlic's strong-smelling sulfur compounds are metabolized, forming allyl methyl sulfide. Allyl methyl sulfide (AMS) cannot be digested and is passed into the blood. It is carried to the lungs and the skin, where it is excreted. Since digestion takes several hours, and the release of AMS several hours more, the effect of eating garlic may be present for a long time.

* This well-known phenomenon of "garlic breath" is alleged to be alleviated by eating fresh parsley. The herb is, therefore, included in many garlic recipes, such as Pistou, Persillade and the garlic butter spread used in garlic bread.

Since the smell results mainly from digestive processes placing compounds such as AMS in the blood, and AMS is released through the lungs over many hours, eating parsley provides only a temporary masking.

One way of accelerating the release of AMS from the body is the use of a sauna or through any other exercise that makes you sweat and release your bodily toxins.

* The only guaranteed way to prevent garlic breath is simply not to eat garlic; it's a very effective method.

* Germ-induced garlic breath can be reduced by usual oral hygiene methods. Standard stinky breath solutions include regular use of mouthwash, as well as brushing and flossing teeth after every meal.

* There are also commercial bad breath medicines available that are more powerful than the usual mouthwashes you can buy in shops. These are available from your doctor, your pharmacist or the Internet.

* Some people also claim that chewing cardamom seeds has a similar effect to parsley and can work as a garlic breath remedy. Cardamom has a very strong flavor, so this might not be an option for some people.

* Knobexol is the perfect agent against garlic, alcohol and cigarette smell. This special, patented herb mix neutralizes the "smell" agent of garlic in your body. This is the determining difference to the common agents that only cover the smell.

It prevents garlic smell in your breath and from your skin. The active substances of the garlic are neutralized by a special herb mix (and are not just covered or masked by stronger, more pleasant smells!). The problem with garlic odor after a good dinner will be perfectly resolved with this phenomenal product.

Making A Good Cup Of Black Coffee

So just how to make black coffee especially a good one depends on a number of different factors and what type of equipment you decide to use. In this article we will look at what you need in order to make a good cup of black coffee and one type of pot that you can use.

Generally the best type of coffee to use in order to make a great tasting cup of black coffee is that which has been freshly ground. The reason why freshly ground is better is because after a couple of days ground coffee generally begins to lose its taste. Also if you are going to make coffee on your stove top then only keep it on there for a few minutes as any longer and the coffee will lose some of its taste and in some cases will become bitter. So it is better if you serve the coffee as soon as you have made it. Also you should use about 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every cup that you make expect in the case of espresso. If making an espresso it is best to follow the guidelines that your espresso machine will have.

We will now take a look at a way on how to make black coffee using a plunger pot.

It is important that you use medium to fine ground coffee when making black coffee using this method. This type of pot allows you to make a full flavored coffee. As it is made from borosilicate glass you can pour hot water directly into it, however at no time should it be allowed to stand directly on a heat source. You will often find that they come in 3 sizes, 3 cup, 8 cup and 12 cup.

So how do you use one to make black coffee?

1. What you first need to do is pour some warm but not boiling water into the jar and then empty this out.

2. Next you need to place in the coffee grounds use 2 tablespoons of grounds for every cup of coffee that you are making.

3. Now you can add the hot water (preferably use water that has just boiled).

4. Place the plunger lid back on top of the pot. Once the plunger is in place mix it around a bit as this will stop the grounds from settling in one place at the top of the jar and then after a minute or so you can then press the plunger down. However there are some coffee connoisseurs who actually prefer to press the plunger down as soon as they place the lid on. But the decision is yours as to when this happens.

5. Now you can start to pour and enjoy.

Hopefully the guidelines shown above have shown you how to make black coffee that not only smells nice but also tastes really great as well.

Creating Learning Centers for Preschoolers

Many early childhood preschool classrooms are set up in a very particular way. Learning centers or corners are areas in the room that represent a particular component of the curriculum. There are many different types of learning centers and to keep children interested these should be changed and even rotated periodically. Here are some ideas for learning centers. If you only have space for 2 or 3 centers then just change them around periodically. This will keep the children very interested in exploring new centers. These can even be created in the child's home with some creativity on the parents' part.

These special learning centers are important for so many developmental reasons as you will read below but the best part is that during free play time the children can feel independent and will have something fun to do. They will gravitate to an area of interest for them. Some kids love science while others may love the pretend play area and yet others may feel musically inclined on a given day. Another child may just want to curl up with a pillow and a favorite book. As teachers of preschoolers it is reassuring to know that the children are busy and safe while you tend to a sick child, feed a baby or do some necessary paperwork.

Free play time is invaluable to children. It allows them freedom of choice and independence. They can interact with their peers and verbalize and express themselves - say what they are thinking and feeling. They learn to compromise and negotiate and gain a respect for the ideas of others. They also take on roles of follower and leader. Socialization does not just come naturally to children - they must practice it over and over and learning centers are the best place to do just that!

Using all of these interest areas in your weekly or monthly them creates what is called a 'whole language' experience. On the preschool level it simply means integrating literacy into other areas of the curriculum, especially math, science, and social studies. For example if your theme is "Apples' you can have something related to apples in several of the centers. In Science Corner you can have apple seeds glued to an index card and labeled or a basket with 4 different varieties of apples to compare; in math corner there can be more apple seeds to count or a basket of fresh apples that will be used for snack or a baking project after counting and making groups with first; in the Art Center you can have red paint and apples cut in half to make star-print paintings or make apple prints with an apple shaped cookie cutter; in Reading Corner you can read the story of Johnny Appleseed, Snow White or How Apple Trees Grow, etc...

Science Corner:

This area is ever-changing with the seasons. You can fill this learning center with an unending variety of things related to science and nature. Books related to weather, insects, seasons, flowers and plants, seeds, animals, rocks, age-appropriate experiments, etc... are important in this center. Small containers and jars to hold collections of items that the children may find outside should be available for things like rocks, leaves, pinecones, seeds, flowers and plants, some stuffed animals, ladybugs and other insects (real or rubber toys). Tools such as magnifying glasses, binoculars, eye-droppers, microscopes and kaleidoscopes, mirrors and magnets, as well as paper and pencils help children explore.

If you have space some real plants or live pets might be included such as a butterfly garden in springtime or a real lizard or hamster. As you change themes you can change items each month or week. Surprising the children is most fun in this area - for instance they can suddenly discover a new pet goldfish or a bowl filled with dirt and real worms or a Ziploc bag filled with ice cubes! This is the real curiosity corner!

Math Corner:

This corner could be combined with the Science Corner or remain separate. Some things to include would be calculators, large numbers to finger trace, rulers, tape measures, coins, beads or plastic chips (like poker chips) to count (be careful of toddlers trying to put them in their mouths), small scales, plastic measuring cups and spoons, and things to weigh. Counting books and paper and pencils and child-safe scissors again are important for children to use as they wish.

Housekeeping or Dress-Up Corner:

Children will spend much of their free time playing in this center. This is where they practice and pretend to be whatever they want to be. Play-acting and role-playing are a very important part of child's play. Here children practice their social skills and "try on" a variety of different roles that help them make sense of their world. This will be your largest center and will need lots of props. Some of the larger items may be a child-sized table and chair set, a pretend kitchen with dishes, pots and pans, a shopping cart and toy cash register with play money, a baby stroller, dolls, a tool workshop, mirrors, telephones, and such. Dress-up clothing can include anything from commercially purchased costumes of community helpers to homemade items such as aprons, all types of hats, shoes and props. Children love to play with real life size props just as much as children's pretend ones so mixing it up will work great. Thrift stores and second-hand clothing shops are filled with all kinds of wonderful items to add to your housekeeping corner. Ask for donations from parents as well as check out the local yard sales for bargains.

Art Center:

Art for Preschoolers allows for expression of artistic creativity. This center can be very colorful and bright, filled with art work, color posters and art supplies. Some items to include and rotate out are a variety of paper (construction, tracing, newsprint, scraps, etc.), markers, children's scissors, crayons, water paint sets, glue, popsicle sticks, glitter, an Easel, art smocks (or old adult sized T-shirts) to protect clothing, water cups and paint brushes. A fun thing to have in the art center is a basket or shoe box filled with a variety of collage materials that the children can use anytime to create or add-on to their creations. Some items to include are feathers, pom-poms, old buttons and beads, rick-rack, streamers, foil, wax paper, pieces of fabric, toilet paper tubes, pipe cleaners, tissue paper, coffee filters, strings and ribbons, color samples from the paint store, etc. Not all supplies should be accessible to the children as some require supervision but the basics should be there for free-art activities.

Manipulative Center (or Block Corner):

This area is important for building small or fine motor skills and should includes blocks, games, puzzles and things that children need to use their fingers with. Learn-to-dress boards that have zippers, shoelaces, buttons and snaps are great as well as items of clothing with this type of closure. Include lacing cards and all sizes of beads or pasta noodles like ziti to string.

Music Corner or Center:

This is a fun corner too! You can fill it with all kinds of toy band instruments such as drums, horns, maracas, keyboards, flutes, whistles, xylophones, band leader hats and batons and more. Children love to explore rhythm and sounds and although it may just sound like noise it does teach and serve a purpose. Rhythm is a difficult skill to master and helps build coordination. In this corner you can also have a CD player with a microphone and a library of music the children can sing and dance to or just listen to during an art activity.

Reading Corner:

(This one is my favorite!) This is the area where your treasured books are. Children that are exposed to books at an early age become readers for life. You can build a very nice preschool library over time. Scholastic Book Clubs has a club just for preschoolers so you could sign up for that online and get free books from each order you place. How it works: You give each family a monthly flyer and they order books through your club. You can place the group order online or mail it in. Each month Scholastic will give you free books that you earn from your groups order. They also offer very inexpensive books as low as $1. Scholastic has books for every theme in your preschool curriculum. You can find books at yard sales, eBay, thrift shops and library sales. Always check the clearance center at your local bookstore too. Some other props to place in this area might be a rocking chair and some floor pillows and be sure that it is well-lit. A recording device and a flannel board are great tools for storytelling and re-telling. Asking children to re-tell a story is a great way to build literacy skills such as sequencing, memory and detail observation. You can bring props in from other corners to highlight a story you are reading. For example: use a mirror, a witch hat and an apple when reading 'Snow White.

So, as you see this is a great way to create a fun learning environment for preschoolers. It can be ever-changing to reflect your themes, the seasons or holidays as well as everyday play. Have fun creating your own curiosity corners!

Walk Away - Christina Aguilera lyrics.wmv

What do you do when you know something's bad for you And you still can't let go? I was naïve Your love was like candy Artificially sweet I was deceived by the wrapping Got caught in your web And I learned how to bleed I was prey in your bed And devoured completely Oh and it hurts my soul Cuz I can't let go All these walls are caving in I can't stop my suffering I hate to show that I've lost control Cuz I, I keep going right back To the one thing that I need to walk away from I need to get away from ya I need to walk away from ya Get away, walk away, walk away I should have known I was used for amusement Couldn't see through the smoke It was all an illusion Now I've been licking my wounds (licking my wounds) But the venom seems deeper (deeper, deeper) We both can seduce But darling you hold me prisoner (prisoner) I'm about to break I can't stop this ache I'm addicted to your allure and I'm feigning for a cure Every step I take Leads to one mistake I keep going right back To the one thing that I need oh I can't mend This torn state I'm in Getting nothing in return What did I do to deserve The pain of this slow burn And everywhere I turn I keep going right back To the one thing that I need to walk away from I need to get away from ya I need to walk away from ya Everytime I try to gasp for air I am smothered in despair it's never over, over Seems I'll never wake from this nightmare I let out a silent prayer, let it be over, over Inside I'm screaming Begging, pleading No more ...

Many consumers found this ideal because it retails for just under $30. In addition to that, it brews flavourful latte and other beverages such as cocoa. Also, its 600 watt power allows it to brew in no time at all.

Krups FNC2 Novo 3000 Espresso/Cappuccino/Latte Maker
This one from Krups is a bit expensive and will cost you more than $150 but it can make 3 beverages efficiently. It uses two coffee filters and can brew either ground or pod coffee. Consumers like it because it makes just the right creamy texture of froth which is what you will look for in lattes.

It has a removable water tank so you can easily fill it up or easily clean it. Also, its functions enables little cleaning time as it has a no-drip and no-mess feature.

Capresso 303.01 4-Cup Espresso and Cappuccino Machine
You can also make your favourite cup of latte with this brewer. It is a cheaper choice than Krups. It uses 800 watts of power so you can really say that it brews fast.

It has a steam selector coupled with a swivel frother so you can really tweak it to achieve the froth you want in your beverage. The carafe is dishwasher safe so that is one less work for you. On top of all these, Capresso ensured your safety in using it by incorporating a safety boiler cap and a protective thumb guard that cannot be seen in other brewers.

DeLonghi BAR32 Retro Pump-Driven 35 ounce Espresso Maker
Whether it is espresso or latte, this machine can do it all. You can brew using your favourite coffee pod. It has been integrated with an ESE filter that makes it easier to brew espresso or latte. It also ensures you will get a frothy crema.

Try these coffee machines and taste the huge difference.

The Best Way To Cook A Wonderful Crock Pot Potato Recipe

Nowadays there are thousands of options for crock pot recipes. You can select from the traditional pot roast to chicken stew to a more interesting enchilada or pizza casserole recipe. It's possible to cook practically anything in a crock pot, but have you ever though about the plain old potato? Most people would not think of cooking side dishes in a slow cooker since generally these appliances are used for making one pot meals. One really great way to bring a new side dish to the table is by creating a delicious crock pot potato recipe.

A Bit About the Potato Itself

Most likely, you've never given the potato much thought other than whether or not to use one or two 'dolups of Daisy' on your baked potato. Potatoes are so common place we tend to stick with what we've grown up with or know best, basic mashed or french fried. The potato does, however, have a rich and interesting history, and can be researched as far back in history as four thousand years ago to Peru. However, when it was first brought to the European continent it was not exactly a big hit because the people at the time believed potatoes to be harbingers of disease. Wow, humans have certainly come a long way.

Tips for Storing Potatoes Properly

Now that we are no longer afraid of potatoes (although I am a bit frightened of the carbs at times,) they have a standard place on most family dinner tables. In fact, the average American person will consume over one hundred pounds of potatoes annually. That's about one potato each and every day. So, with all of these potatoes being purchased and consumed, it's probably a good idea to know how to store them properly. Cooking hard or soggy potatoes in a crock pot recipe will not work, so you will need a container to keep them in. Many folks opt for an everyday brown paper sack from the grocery store. Potatoes should be kept in a cool, dry location, preferably off of the floor.

Cheesy Scalloped Crock Pot Potatoes

10 large potatoes, thinly sliced

2 large onions, chopped

2 cans cheddar cheese soup, condensed

1 cup milk

In a small bowl, mix soup with milk. In crock pot, layer one half the potatoes and one half the chopped onions; spread one half the soup-milk mixture. Repeat layering using rest of ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours.

Do not let your crock pot be used solely for stews and soups. Get that nifty little appliance out and cook all kinds of wonderful new dishes, preferably a nice side dish like our Cheesy Scalloped Potato recipe above. This recipe is great for large groups and will travel well in today's convenient slow cookers. Look for more great side dish recipes online at the numerous recipe and cooking websites available.

My alarming Pokemon Blue story... (part 1)

This story is true, and to this day has freaked me out, so I figured I'd share it for Halloween since it is almost here and since it is one of my favorite holidays. I have never told anyone this before because it has been so bizarre for me to take in. Could my game be "haunted"? Is there more to the MISSINGNO glitch than meets the eye? Did some GameFreak developer die while working on this game and is this is some kind of tribute, or could this even be a paranormal happening?? I don't know, but this freaks me out. Enjoy. :/ The background music is the theme that played in Lavender Town in the game, but reversed. The picture is some weird Jigglypuff thing I found off google images. Fitting to say the least. EDIT: Right after I got through uploading this at 5.30am in the morning, my phone rings... it says "Private Caller" on the caller ID and they leave no message. WTF. Who could be calling at this hour?

Christmas Sweets

Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Come one, come all! Yes, it is the cooking season, I mean holiday season, so get ready to get your money's worth out of your kitchen this Christmas with cooking your feasts for your family.

Everyone looks forward to the feast, but what I look forward to most is the obscene amount of sweets and pastry that will be placed in front of me and the little restraint that I must show towards them.

Here are three of my favorite Christmas sweet specials that you should try this holiday season:

· Brownie Bonbons Recipe
· Candied Orange Peels Recipe
· Choco-Cherry Truffles Recipe

Brownie Bonbons

For making the perfect brownie "bonbons" you need a package of brownie mix (the more chocolately the better) and a half a cup of crushed candy canes. The first step is to make the brownies, just like any brownies before. Take them out of the oven a little before they are done and roll them into small balls. Then crush up the candy canes and roll the brownie balls into the candy canes, completely coating them. Let them cool and then serve!

Candied Orange Peels

To make candied orange peels you need the peels of three large oranges, a cup of water, two table spoons of corn syrup, and 3 cups of sugar. First take your peels and cut them into strips, about a quarter inch wide. Then boil a pot of water with the corn syrup, and sugar until completely dissolved. Simmer the orange peels for forty minutes, then let cool on a cookie sheet, and wait for them to cool. Enjoy!

Choco-Cherry Truffles

Just the word truffle makes me start to drool. Truffles are one of those foods that everyone loves, so you won't go wrong if you decide to try this recipe. Melt the semisweet chocolate in with the milk and salt in a saucepan (watch carefully as it tends to burn). Next, stir in the liquor, cherries, and nuts. Allow this mixture to cool and put in the refrigerator for at least an hour. The next part requires you to scoop out balls of chocolate. Then cover these balls of chocolate with melted white chocolate and sprinkles.

Expat Life in Sri Lanka, Colombo

I recently visited the wonderful island of Sri Lanka, and found a country full of surprises.

Sri Lanka is situated just south of India, in the Indian Ocean. Once known as the Dominium of Ceylon and often referred to as the tea country, tea plantations abundantly thrive across the island, with spice gardens, banana and coconut palms growing randomly to create a jungle of natural resources.

People, animals and transport seem to co-exist side by side with no animosity towards each other. Dogs wonder aimlessly across or bask in the sun at the side of roads, cows and goats roam around everywhere, even on the beaches (which I found rather amusing) and people are everywhere, whether walking, cycling, using a tuc-tuc, motorbike with 5 astride, in a taxi, bus, car or truck, each takes up a space of the not too wide road. But co-exist they do, there is no anger at being stuck behind a truck, merely a short hooting of the horn to say I am here and would like to pass, politeness abounds and the expression and sounds are all of friendliness, within a country that sorely needs help at redeveloping itself since the tsunami. People are poor and yet happiness is everywhere.... Not just for the child on the hip or the person at their side, but for expats and tourists as well.

Tourists fluctuate towards the resorts and some chance the areas slightly outside of these areas, to experience a quieter less harassed holiday. Small pockets of expats can be found, dotted all over the country. When you bump into these people and chat about life on the island, there is not much to complain about. Yes, sometimes the water gets turned off or the electricity, yes the internet is not as fast as they would like it to be. Isn't that how most people feel in developed countries anyway: The faster it gets the faster we want it. In this little piece of paradise, expats are not too concerned that it takes a little longer to do things here, the people are prepared to wait, not too hasty to move forward too quickly. There was a lot of talk and concern about the elections and safety within the country and there are still road blockades and police / army personnel with guns wandering around keeping peace if necessary. However, with 70% of the population being Buddhists, the lifestyle is peaceful and life simplistic.

From an expat perspective, I could not fault the lifestyle. As said above, yes there are definite things missing, things are slower, it takes a good 4 - 6 hours to get from Colombo to Galle and similarly to anywhere about 200km's apart. I cannot say that the roads are particularly in good condition, but in the 10 days that I visited, I did not see one accident. Hardships could include the lack of being able to get from one part of the island to another quickly, the lack of fast internet connection, perhaps the human waste / refuse, which allows for the influx of flies, the dirt which is left to lie around and lastly the lack of funds to rebuild the country to what it was before the Tsunami.

Having said that, I have to look at all the good things that you find there, the beauty of the natural resources, how the nationals and expats are trying to rebuild the country, the beaches, game parks and mountains. This is truly a beautiful part of the world.

Expat Cost of living summary

The currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee LKR

The Exchange rate as at 15 January 2010 was $1 = 114.217 Rupees

I am going to break the Cost of living down according to some of the basket items:

Alcohol and Tobacco: Alcohol at Bar, Beer, Cigarettes, Locally Produced Spirit, Whiskey, Wine

Cigarettes (20s) - $3.14 to $9

Domestic Beer(500ml) - $2.50

Imported Beer (330ml) - $5.80

Wine at a bar - $6 a glass

Wine at a shop - $15 (750ml bottle)

Hotels tend to increase the prices of alcohol as it is the one way that they can make a profit. There are many small hotels and restaurants which create a competitive edge to where you can stay.

Clothing: Business Suits, Casual Clothing, Children's Clothing and footwear, Coats and hats, Evening Wear, Shoe Repairs, Underwear

Casual Long Sleeved Shirt (Men) - $12

Casual Long Sleeved Trousers (Men) - $20

Shorts (Men) - $11

T-Shirt (Men) - $6

Casual Blouse (Women) - $7

Casual Skirt (Women) - $12

Children's Jeans (Boys) - $5

Children's Jeans (Girls) - $3.50

Children's Shirt(Boys) - $5

Children's Shirt(Girls) - $4

Clothes are extremely cheap, in Colombo a person can get most of the name branded clothing at fairly reasonable prices in Factory shops.

Communication: Home Telephone Rental and Call Charges, Internet Connection and service provider fees, Mobile / Cellular Phone Contract and Calls

Monthly phone rental - $4.36

Phone call rate - $0.05 for a local call

Internet line connection fee - $104 (buy all equipment with installation)

Mobile / cellular call rate - 90% of phones are prepaid,

Mobile Phone 100 Minutes Call - $38

- $0.012 - $0.05 sms peak times

Due to so many of the nationals working overseas to send money home, the communication costs are extremely low and there are often special deals or no cost is involved in the actual call.

Education: Creche / Pre-School Fees, High School / College Fees, Primary School Fees, Tertiary Study Fees

Annual Creche fee - $4.36 per month

Annual Primary school fee - $260 - $436 per month

Annual High School fee - $260 - $436 per month

Annual 1st Year Tertiary / University fee - $260 to $436 per month (dependent on which

private school they go to)

Private schooling is the most expensive on the island for expat children to attend, however the rates in comparison to other countries are reasonable. Expats that I came across spoke highly of the education system in the country and were happy with the private education that their children were receiving.

Furniture and Appliances: DVD Player, Fridge Freezer, Iron, Kettle, Toaster, microwave, Light Bulbs, Television, Vacuum Cleaner, Washing Machine

Gas / Fuel - 12 ½ kg bottle - $14

Local property Rates - 8 to 10% of value of property

Expats cannot buy a property directly, this has to be done via a Lawyer who owns the property. Mortgage for locals is 4/5%. This is where most expats find the costs creep in, running the air conditioners is extremely expensive as well as the cost of water.

Domestic Rates - full time per person - $80 average

1 Black inkjet printer cartridge - $14

Personal Care: Cosmetics, Haircare, Moisturiser / Sun Block, Nappies, Pain Relief Tablets, Toilet Paper, Toothpaste, Soap / Shampoo / Conditioner

Body lotion (400ml) Vaseline Intensive car - $4.53

Toilet paper 1 ply per roll - $0.50

Toothpaste (200g) - $1.92

Shampoo (200ml) - $2.40

Some of the items that can be purchased can be expensive, like creams, sunblocks and cosmetic creams. Name brand products are the most expensive.

Recreation and Culture: Books, Camera Film, Cinema Ticket, DVD and CD's, Sports goods, Theatre Ticket

Books paper back - $10

Cinema ticket - $0.50

DVD / CD Imported - $2

Cricket ticket - $0.50 to $8

Theatre Ticket - only in Colombo - $30

Hard cover books are expensive in the country, but paper back books are of a similar cost to the US and UK. Cinema tickets are cheap due to the availability of cheap DVD replicas which can be bought on street corners. International cricket tickets are also kept cheap for the local population.

Restaurants / Meals out / Hotels: Business Dinner, Dinner at Restaurant (non fast food), Hotel Rates, Take Away Drinks & Snacks (fast Food)

Business Dinner excl Alcohol - $22 per person

Dinner / lunch at local restaurant - $8 per person

McDonalds Big Mac - $4.10

Hotel Rates 3* - $8 to $50 pppn

Take away - Can of cola x 1 - $0.70

Medium pizza - $3.50

Hamburger - $2.00

Coffee - pot x 3 cups - $1.40

As in most countries how much you pay for a meal is dependent on where you go, the local restaurants have great local meals, as well as international flavours, we found a fabulous vegetarian restaurant in Galle, well worth a visit and all prices were fairly cheap. Some restaurants do take advantage of the tourist population and serve sub standard meals. However, most restaurants were good with their portions and meal plans.

Transport: Hire Purchase / Lease of Vehicle, Petrol / Diesel, Public Transport, Service Maintenance, Tyres, Vehicle Insurance, Vehicle Purchase

Hire / Lease car - Sedan Toyota Corolla - $37.14 per day for 1 week

Hire / Lease car - Toyota RAV4 - $46.71 per day for 1 week

Petrol unleaded per litre - $1.23

Diesel per litre - $0.64

Bus Ticket (one way) - $1.00

Taxi Ride - per km - $0.50

Tuc Tuc - 10 km ride - $6.00

Train Ticket 2nd class - $1.57

If you are visiting I would suggest you use the local taxis and tuc-tucs, driving can be a head-ache and unpleasant experience if you are not used to the local norms. However, speeds do not go over 80km on the bigger roads and overall a safe place to drive.

The above detail are some of the items form the basis of the cost of living indexes for each basket group in the Xpatulator calculators, these costs are then used with their indexes and exchange rates to calculate the cost of living in different locations.

Hypothyroid Diet

Hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid) can remain undetected for years. People commonly have the symptoms of hypothyroidism even though their blood tests indicate that their thyroid function is 'normal'. This is because standard pathology tests for thyroid function can have difficulty detecting 'sub clinical' cases of hypothyroidism. The most common symptoms of hypothyroidism are chronic tiredness, constipation, feeling the cold and dry skin. If you are in a high risk category for thyroid dysfunction - have a family member with a thyroid condition (especially your mother); are at the menopausal age; have experienced lots of stress in the past two-three years; or have hormonal imbalances - then it's important that you support your thyroid, even if the tests tell that your thyroid is 'normal'. One of the best ways to support thyroid function is with diet.

Certain foods improve hypothyroidism by supplying the essential minerals that the thyroid needs to function and produce hormones.

These include:

1. Tyrosine-rich foods. The amino acid tyrosine combines with iodine to make the hormone thyroxine. These foods include meat, fish, turkey and chicken breast, low fat milk and yogurt, almonds, avocado, bananas, lima beans, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, lentils. Supplements of tyrosine should be taken on an empty stomach so that it doesn't have to compete with other amino acids.

2. Iodine-rich foods. Iodine is needed to make thyroid hormones. Ideal food sources include Celtic sea salt, seaweed (sushi, nori rolls), salt water fish and sea food. Iodized salt is available but should be used in small amounts once or twice a week along with a good quality Celtic sea salt. Iodine supplements are usually in the form of kelp tablets. Consult your health practitioner before using these, because the wrong dose can unbalance your thyroid.

3. High quality protein. All of our body's glands and hormones are made from protein. Try to eat high quality lean protein at every meal.

4. Selenium-rich foods - meat, chicken, salmon, tuna, seafood, whole unrefined grains, brazil nuts, brewer's yeast, broccoli, dairy products, garlic, onions and black strap molasses.

5. Supplements of Vitamin B complex and essential fatty acids because they help to balance the entire hormonal system.

6. Sunlight - while not a food, its important to get a daily dose of safe sun. Light stimulates the pineal gland, which in turn positively affects the thyroid as well as all the other endocrine glands.

Certain foods are detrimental for hypothyroidism because they can inhibit the production of thyroid hormones.

1. Soy products. Isoflavones are hormone-like substances found in soy products. High consumption of soy products have been found to suppress thyroid function in some people and can even cause or worsen hypothyroidism. In particular, an isoflavone called genistein, appears to reduce thyroid hormone output by blocking the activity of an enzyme called thyroid peroxidase. This enzyme is responsible for adding iodine onto the thyroid hormones.

How much is too much soy? Each person can tolerate a different amount and unfortunately soy is hidden in many processed and refined foods. If you have a family history of thyroid disease or a diet low in the minerals iodine and selenium, you need to be careful of your soy intake. Reduce your consumption of soy products (soy milk, tofu, tempeh, miso, soy sauce) to a maximum of two or three times per week. If you have already been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, or you display the common symptoms, then reduce your intake to less than twice in a week.

2. Cruciferous vegetables - broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, mustard, rutabagas, kohlrabi, and turnips. Isothiocyanates are the category of substances in cruciferous vegetables that have been associated with decreased thyroid function. They appear to reduce thyroid function by blocking thyroid peroxidase, and also by disrupting messages that are sent across the membranes of thyroid cells. Cooking these vegetables does make the isothiocyanates less available. Also, because they are so good for us in other ways, only restrict this group if you have been actually diagnosed with hypothyroidism or have strong symptoms.

3. Low progesterone goes hand in hand with low thyroid, so avoid foods that promote oestrogen dominance. This includes any animal product that has not been produced organically (chicken, eggs, dairy, beef, lamb, pork, etc.). All of these foods are available organic.

4. It is believed by some researchers that chlorine and fluoride (found in most tap water) block iodine receptors in the thyroid gland, eventually leading to hypothyroidism.

5. Gluten is linked to thyroid dysfunction (both hyper and hypo thyroid) so if you have any digestive problems or any one in your family with a gluten sensitivity, it would be worth dramatically reducing your gluten intake.

The Doors: The Soft parade

I think this is their best song. Lyrics: When I was back there in seminary school, there was a person there Who put forth the proposition, that you can petition the lord with prayer Petition the lord with prayer, petition the lord with prayer You cannot petition the lord with prayer! Can you give me sanctuary, I must find a place to hide, a place for me to hide Can you find me soft asylum, I cant make it anymore, the man is at the door Peppermint, miniskirts, chocolate candy, champion sax and a girl named sandy Theres only four ways to get unraveled, one is to sleep and the other is travel, da da One is a bandit up in the hills, one is to love your neighbor till His wife gets home Catacombs, nursery bones, winter women, growing stones Carrying babies, to the river Streets and shoes, avenues, leather riders Selling news, the monk bought lunch Ha ha, he bought a little, yes, he did, woo! At least, the two dozen who showed up to a meeting with the local BP representative on Thursday night are angry. Voices were raised, and one woman cried. "People are scared," said Mayor David Camardelle. "They think BP is going to pull out. They don't know how they are going to pay the rent." Residents spent an hour sharing a spectrum of worries while sitting in rows of hard purple chairs under the fluorescent lights of the community center. They said that they are getting sick, that they aren't being hired to do the work, and that BP is spraying dispersant every night -- but all that does is sink the oil, so they will keep having to deal with it. Karen Hopkins, who runs the office at the currently-nonoperational Dean Blanchard Seafood and dock, said that her reimbursement check got dramatically reduced the day after an interview that she gave aired on CBS.
